Conference Support Staff


General Function
The incumbent is deployed to a variety of work departments throughout the contracted employment period. Work departments include food service/dining room, maintenance and housekeeping. The incumbent will report to the director of the department to which he/she is assigned. The position includes lifting and carrying objects (up to 50 lbs.), walking, bending, sitting and standing for extended time periods.

Qualifications
It is preferred that the incumbent will have completed at least one year of college and has had experience as a paid or volunteer worker. The incumbent should have strong communication and customer service skills, quality work habits and the desire to work in the service industry. Preference will be given to those applicants who hold a current CPR and/or First Aid certification.

Job Requirement
The incumbent is assigned to one of the following four departments on a two-week schedule during the summer season. During this two-week period, the designated department will be his/her primary department although he/she may be assigned to another department on a temporary basis as needed. The incumbent will rotate through four departments during the summer and will work at least two to three rotations in the food service department.
 
Housekeeping
    Clean residence and meeting rooms, assist with daily room service, clean public areas including lobbies, porches and rest rooms. Includes such duties as dusting, vacuuming, making beds, scouring toilets and sinks and assisting with laundry. Move appliances and furniture, lift and carry up to 60 lbs. and work with chemicals.
 
Food Service/Dining Room
    Work a variety of assignments including dishwashing, food preparation, stocking buffet line, table side service, cleaning dining tables and floors. Lift up to 35 lbs. to table height and stand and walk for eight hours.
 
Maintenance
    Assist with buildings and grounds maintenance. Duties include raking leaves, trimming hedges, maintaining hiking trails, trash pickup, painting facilities and equipment, assisting with vehicle maintenance. Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
 
  There is limited availability for positions in the following departments. Incumbents filling these positions will not rotate, but will remain in the designated department for the entire summer. However, they may be assigned to another department on an as needed basis.
 
  Snack Shop
    Prepare items at the soda fountain (sundaes, ice cream cones, smoothies, banana splits, etc.), assist customers with merchandise and soda fountain items, process sales, clean soda fountain and store area. Operate cash register, make change, balance cash box. Maintain a clean, orderly and friendly gift shop. Lift and carry 25 lbs.
 
Conference Services
    Meet the needs of the conference groups including, setting meeting rooms, lobby areas, playing fields, porches and auditoriums. This involves audio-visual setup, delivering refreshments, table and chair arrangements and other services. Work at the Conference Services desk dispensing room keys, sorting mail, delivering messages, checking out athletic equipment and relaying information. Read and speak English, lift and carry 50 lbs. up and down stairs and in/out of vehicles.
 
Guest Services
    Duties include meeting, greeting and interacting with guests, clerical work and switchboard operation. Communicate with guests over the telephone and in person. Answer questions, assign housing, dispense room keys, file records and prepare bills. Use the computer, photocopier and fax machine and operate the switchboard. Handle emergency situations on the switchboard and radio. Make change, balance cash drawer, complete reports and maintain an accurate account of daily income. Read and speak English and work rotating shifts.
 
Aquatics
    Work at outdoor pool. Certified American Red Cross lifeguard or YMCA lifeguard certification, first aid and CPR certified. Support and enforce policies and procedures. Lift 50 lbs. from the floor, clean deck and pool, clean facilities on hands and knees using chemicals, operate pool vacuum cleaner. Good communication skills. Mature, responsible team player.
 
Program
    Duties include work as needed in all program areas: adventure education, crafts, child care and environmental education. For all program areas, we seek responsible, enthusiastic, caring role models.

Adventure programs
  Assist and lead groups in the following areas: group initiatives and games, process individual and group work, set up and belay on climbing tower, mountain biking, hiking, archery and other outdoor activities.

Crafts
  Supervise craft activities (bead work, leather embossing, tie dying, basket weaving, painting , etc.), arts, pottery (hand throwing, pottery wheels, glazing, kiln), and fiber arts (loom weaving, spinning wheels). Operate cash register, make change, balance cash drawer. Clean tables, floors and activity areas.

Child Care
  Provide nurturing educational and recreational program for 3-5 year olds. Clean tables, floors and activity areas. Must pass criminal background investigation.
 
 

Supervisory (Senior) Staff Member


General Function
Senior staff perform the functions of department directors, assistant directors and supervisors. Senior staff are assigned to one of the following departments for the duration of the summer: Conference Services; Food Service/Dining Room; Guest Services; Maintenance; Housekeeping; Gift Shop/Store; Adventure Education, Crafts and Child Care and Aquatics. The incumbent will be responsible for providing leadership to the collegiate staff working in the department and for completing daily departmental tasks. Senior staff members accomplish their goals by maintaining open lines of communication within their own department, with other departments and with guests; providing leadership and hands-on work so that daily duties are completed in a timely and efficient manner; and applying creativity and initiative to enhance the operation of the department. This position includes lifting and carrying objects (up to 50 lbs.), walking, bending, sitting and standing for extended periods of time.

Qualifications
Incumbents need to exhibit experience with direct responsibility for job tasks. They should have experience as a volunteer or worker in a team situation. The incumbent must possess well-developed communication, leadership and customer service skills and a strong work ethic. Preferably, candidates will have practical experience in the department for which they are applying.

  • Provide a department orientation to collegiate staff at the beginning of their rotation and training throughout their deployment.
  • Give leadership to the collegiate staff assigned to the department.
  • Assure that departmental tasks are completed in a timely, quality manner.
  • Provide assistance to guests by answering questions and completing special work requests.
  • Display creativity, initiative and a desire to provide quality customer service, thereby enhancing the department’s daily operation.
  • Assist in other departments as needed.
  • Act as a role model for collegiate staff, both on the job and in the residence halls.
